The Mathematics Instructional Learning Community (MILC) Project is an alliance among Fayette County Public Schools (FCPS) math teachers focusing on:
  • Increasing the pedagogy and content knowledge of math teachers;
  • Integrating technology tools into everyday math instruction; and
  • Developing, implementing and revising units of study.

Thanks to Tates Creek for the great presentation Monday!

I was especially excited about the idea of using the tiles to teach completing the square. I usually am hesitant about using the tiles for the same reason Shannon mentioned--sometimes it seems like the students would have a hard time making the leap from the concrete to the abstract in their understanding. I do LOVE using tiles for teaching adding signed numbers and I am glad to know another excellent use for them.

I too plan on using them in part 2 when we tackle factoring.
