First of all, I do not deserve credit for this idea, a colleague of mine came up with it. When we taught transformations, our first lesson was translations. In order to indroduce the topic we cleared the tables from the middle of the room and pulled up youtube on the LCD projector. Then we danced the "Cha Cha Slide". When it says "slide to the left", then "slide to the right" we call those moves translations! From then on in the class we called the popular dance song the Cha Cha Translate. Students will never forget that a translation is a slide.

By the way http://www.tessellations.org/ is a really great website to tie into the transformations unit. It shows many neat Escher tessellations, and if you go to the Do It Yourself tab, they show simple step by step directions for making tessellations. Students have a lot of fun with this activity and it makes a great bulletin board to display all their work!
