Interdisciplinary National Science Project Incorporating Research and Education Experience

[Students Grades 9-12 and Higher Education]
[Available: Nationally]

APPLICATIONS ARE NOW BEING ACCEPTED!
APPLICATION DEADLINE IS DECEMBER 31, 2008.

The Interdisciplinary National Science Project Incorporating Research and Education Experience, or INSPIRE, is a multi-tiered year-round program designed for students in ninth- to 12th -grade who are interested in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics education and careers.

Students selected for INSPIRE will:
--Participate in the INSPIRE Online Community.
--Learn about science, technology, engineering and mathematics, or STEM, fields of study and careers.
--Compete for unique summer experiences at a NASA facility.

The Online Community allows regular collaboration with other like-minded students with interests in science, aeronautics and space exploration. NASA's unique mission provides the theme for the educational content in the Online Community. Resources, activities and educational modules act as a living curriculum and add relevancy to high school courses. Additional activities include participation in video teleconferences with NASA scientists: design competitions; and a variety of opportunities for science, technology, engineering and mathematics education and career exploration.

INSPIRE began its phased implementation in the summer of 2008 with the placement of 153 students from 23 states and Puerto Rico at 10 NASA facilities in the Tier 2B and Tier 3 summer internships. The INSPIRE Online Community will be fully functional in the fall of 2009. The implementation of Tier 1 and Tier 2A summer experiences is also planned for 2009, if funding is available.

To participate in the INSPIRE Online Community, students must:
--Be enrolled in ninth- through 12th-grade in high school.
--Be a U.S. citizen at the time of application.
--Have a 2.5 academic grade point average on an unweighted 4.0 scale.
--Demonstrate the desire and the academic preparation to pursue a STEM-related field of s
tudy beyond high school.
