The Mathematics Instructional Learning Community (MILC) Project is an alliance among Fayette County Public Schools (FCPS) math teachers focusing on:

I think that our Sarah's used the hand's on equation materials in class today!!! Maybe we can discuss how it went & get ideas on here.

I think that the hands on equations manipulatives would be great in Part 1, but I am really not sure if there use in Part 2 would be worth the instructional time spent. We are starting to solve equations with two variables already. Does anyone see any benefits or have any ideas about using them in part 2.

I used it today with my part 1 class, they were awesome, for the most part the students really enjoyed doing something different. There were some students who had solved equations before and they were a little confused by the activity.

i concur...my kids really seemed to like them. Of course, i had just went off on them the day before about the d*m# algebra tiles and they may have been a little afraid to tell me they didnt like them!

There were 2 that decided not to to participate and actually asked to do the bookwork...which they did.

Either way...i really liked it. I actually had kids that typically sleep in my class working problems and using the pawns!

Just so you know I spoke with Kendall today about the Alg part I and part II where they take them everyday. She really liked that and she had said she had thought of it as a option before. So she is checking out the logistics of it. I talked with Terry about it as well, maybe we can see them everyday. Yeah!!

Kennedy, I agree with you about using the hands-on equations in part 2. Everything we do from here on out is with 2 variable equations. Taking time out to do one-variable equations would probably just confuse them.

Later in the year we do solve one variable INEQUALITIES. We may be able to use them there?

I tried to use them the other day with a kid in credit recovery doing part 2. He seemed to have difficulty with them, but it seemed to help him in the end. I think they more motivated him to walk up to the board and actually work the problems out by hand because he at first refused to do the pawns and stuff. I like that. For Lubbe, I am talking about Tyler Blakeman.
