Subject: tunnels
At the NCTM in St. Louis, I attended a workshop on quadratics. It was on minimizing the area between a parabola and the x-axis while building a tunnel for Matchbox cars. It would be a perfect addendum to our unit.

It requires finding a vertex and equation, then finding the area under the curve. Then students cut out the tunnel and test it with cars.

Sounds fun! If you have a copy of the activity, feel free to e-mail it to Pete Koutoulas or Natalee so they can add it to our unit. You may want to look at the MILC final units site to see how I numbered/labeled everything before you send it, though, so you can name this activity in a similar manner. Thanks, Kelly!
