The Mathematics Instructional Learning Community (MILC) Project is an alliance among Fayette County Public Schools (FCPS) math teachers focusing on:
  • Increasing the pedagogy and content knowledge of math teachers;
  • Integrating technology tools into everyday math instruction; and
  • Developing, implementing and revising units of study.

Subject: ABC Sum Race
Math

Location: Retired FCPS, Current UK and Transy
I have attached a template for ABC Sum Race



The rules are:

1. Divide into groups of three and within the three decide who will be A, B, and C.

2. For each number problem, have each student work their problem individually.

3. When everyone has finished their problem, have them add up their answers.

4. To check their work students share their sum with the teacher. If the sum is correct, the group gets the next card. If it is not correct, they go back and switch cards within the group and work one of their group member’s problem. Then they have the teacher check the sum again. If the answer is correct this time they get the card. If not, the teacher will tell them which card in incorrect and all the group members work on that card together.

5. The first group to complete all ten cards wins.
